Sigurdsson scored an excellent long-range effort against Leicester on Saturday.

Everton's Icelandic midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson celebrates scoring his team's second goal during the English Premier League football match between Leicester City and Everton at King Power...

Garth Crooks has lauded Everton man Gylfi Sigurdsson in his BBC Team of the Week column for an eye-catching stat that has seen the Icelandic maestro top the Premier League charts for six years.

The 29-year-old scored his fifth goal of the season, and fourth in eight Premier League matches, to earn the Toffees all three points against a brave Leicester who had gone down to 10 men in the 63rd minute.

Wes Morgan’s sending off piled the pressure on Everton, but Sigurdsson found the break through from all of 25 yards as he whistled a right-footed effort into the top corner of Kasper Schmeichel’s goal.

Crooks included the former Tottenham Hotspur and Swansea City star in his pick of this weekend’s players, playing on an impressive stat that has seen no one score as many goals from outside the box as Sigurdsson since 2012.

“He’s only gone and done it again,” Crooks said. “Sigurdsson’s 50th Premier league goal, and 19th from outside the area, was as good a strike as you will see. No one has scored more goals outside of the area than Sigurdsson since 2012.

“I normally don’t give a fig about stats but these I have to take seriously. I said last week that he can’t score a simple goal and for some reason they have to be corkers or nothing at all.”

The 62-time international got off to an indifferent start at Everton since completing his £45million move to Goodison Park from Swansea in the summer of 2017.

This season, though, he is beginning to show why he cost such a big figure, with his four Premier League goals coming in his last four appearances in England’s top flight.

Fans will be hoping he remains fit as he is set to join Iceland’s national squad for their match against France on Thursday.
