Leeds United have picked up four points against Aston Villa this season.
Former Aston Villa striker Garry Thompson has let rip at Leeds United ace Pontus Jansson for ‘playing the crowd’ during his team’s dramatic 1-1 draw at the weekend at Elland Road.
Marcelo Bielsa allowed Villa to score an uncontested goal during the game and whilst Albert Adomah was going through to put the ball into the back of the net, Jansson tried to stop him.
Moments before Mateusz Klich had scored a controversial opener, which led to Bielsa’s sporting decision as both teams ended up sharing the spoils in the hotly-contested game.
Speaking to BBC Radio West Midlands Football Phone-in (30/04/2019), Thompson wasn’t impressed with Jansson as he claimed that he ‘smelt a rat’ in regards to the defender’s actions.
“I thought Pontus Jansson was playing to the crowd,” Thompson told BBC Radio WM. “I thought everyone knew what was going on. His teammates had a go at him after.
“I thought he was playing, ‘look at me, I am the only one who is going to defend’. I wasn’t happy with it. I smelt a rat.”
A lot happened at Elland Road on Sunday and some may feel that it could have been worse had something been on the match.
Leeds had no chance of securing an automatic finish, whilst Villa had already secured their playoff status, but if either was still up in the air then things might have been a lot different.
Either way, it sets up the scene that the duo will meet each other for a playoff final clash at Wembley later on this month, but they must win their semi-finals before they can think of that.
