Garry Thompson has some harsh words for Yannick Bolasie following his Aston Villa departure

Everton winger Yannick Bolasie cut short his loan spell at Aston Villa this month.

Garry Thompson has claimed that Yannick Bolasie was ‘never giving you enough’ for the money Aston Villa were paying him following his early return to Everton.

The 29-year-old was a Steve Bruce summer signing after he agreed to join the club on a season-long loan and move down to the Championship from the Premier League

But, Villa confirmed on their official Twitter account on Monday that Bolasie, who played 21 games for the club, has returned to Goodison Park.

BBC pundit Thompson spoke about Bolasie’s departure as he had some harsh words for the winger, who didn’t live up to expectations at Villa Park.

“On paper, Bolasie looked like a good signing,” Thompson told BBC WM. “But, he had been injured for a year, he is coming back and then over the few weeks [under Bruce], he got 20 minutes, here and there – Steve held him back.

“But when he started playing, there were a couple of decent games and he scored a couple of goals. But for the money you are paying him, he was never giving you enough – Bolasie has great ability, but he never did it consistently enough.”

During his time at the club, Bolasie scored two goals and provided five assists for a Villa team that has been struggling to find any consistency in their push for promotion – they are seven points outside of the playoff places.

Last Saturday, during their 2-2 home draw against Hull City, Bolasie was substituted in the second half as he was unable to have any impact on the match.

His departure means that Dean Smith, who will be preparing for the visit of Ipswich Town this weekend, now has the likes of Albert Adomah, Andre Green, Jonathan Kodjia and Anwar El Ghazi to choose from in those wide areas.

For Bolasie, it remains to be seen if Everton boss Marco Silva makes him part of his plans, but the fact that he allowed him to go out on loan in the summer, is perhaps an indicator that he will be spending time away from the first team.
