Garry Thompson has offered his thoughts on Orjan Nyland ahead of Aston Villa’s clash against Leeds United.
Garry Thompson is adamant that Aston Villa will not get promoted to the Premier League if Orjan Nyland continues to play in goal for the club.
The former Villa striker was speaking prior to the Midlands outfit announcing on their official website on Friday afternoon that Croatia goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic has agreed to join the club in January from Belgian side Gent.
Former Bundesliga player Nyland was a Steve Bruce summer signing, but the Norweigan has struggled to cut out the mistakes since moving to the Championship club.
Nyland has been a regular between the sticks for both his previous manager and now Dean Smith, but he has only kept five clean sheets in 20 league games for the promotion-chasing side.
Former Villa man Thompson believes there is always a feeling Nyland is ‘going to let you down’ as he pointed towards a moment during his side’s 2-2 draw at home to Stoke City last Saturday.
When asked if Villa can get promoted with Nyland in goal, Thompson told BBC Radio WM, “No. I have watched a lot of games he has played in and I think he’s a shot-stopper, he makes some good saves but there is always the feeling he is going to let you down.
“Even on Saturday (against Stoke), the ball was played back and Tuanzebe took it away from him. Every now and again there is that worry that he is going to drop a rick.”
Despite the addition of a new goalkeeper, who won’t be able to play for the club until January 1st, Nyland will be preparing to take the hot seat in goal as Smith’s side welcome Championship leaders Leeds United to Villa Park.
After the Leeds encounter, there are two more fixtures before the end of the year, with trips to Swansea and Preston awaiting Nyland and his teammates.
