Could Aston Villa make a last-ditch signing before Thursday’s cut-off point?
BBC Sport pundit Garry Thompson has stated that Said Benrahma would be a ‘brilliant’ signing for Aston Villa as he claimed that he could potentially play as a centre-forward for the club ‘at a push’.
Thursday’s 5 pm deadline is edging ever closer as it seems that a deal for the Brentford winger is unlikely, though the Express did claim that Villa are hoping they can secure his signature.
If Villa are to conclude a deal for the highly-rated winger then they will have to do it fast because time is running out for Villa to secure their 13th signing of the summer.
Speaking to BBC Radio West Midlands Football Phone-In, former Villa striker Thompson shared his thoughts on Villa potentially signing Benrahma.
“He’s a wide man, who can play as a centre-forward at a push,” Thompson told BBC Radio WM. “But to be fair, I think as a wide man, he was excellent last year. If we can get him on the firm then that will be brilliant.
“But we are getting a collection of wide players and we need a centre-forward.”
It does look likely that Villa won’t add another name to their squad ahead of the new Premier League campaign, as the club have no doubt been very busy over the course of the summer.
Some supporters may argue that their attack needed another extra leg, but either way, as a whole it has been a quite remarkable transfer window.
A tough test awaits Villa first up at the weekend because they take on Champions League finalists Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
