Aston Villa could reportedly make a late move for Chelsea defender Gary Cahill.

Garry Thompson is certain that Aston Villa would pull off a ‘massive coup’ if they were to sign Chelsea defender Gary Cahill on deadline day.

The Birmingham Mail claim that Villa could still make a late move for the 33-year-old if he fails to secure a move to another Premier League club before Thursday’s cut off point.

Centre-back Cahill has only played 21 minutes of Premier League football under boss Maurizio Sarri this season and did not feature in the matchday squad that was heavily beaten at Bournemouth on Wednesday night.

Nonetheless, former Villa favourite and BBC pundit Thompson offered his thoughts on Cahill potentially returning to the club.

“They [the board] said they were going to go young and hungry,” Thompson told BBC WM. “But you can understand the Cahill thing.

“An awful lot of money to get him in there but even Premier League clubs are talking about getting him in. He would be a massive coup if we can get him in. He would be a leader.”

Former Premier League winner Cahill came through the ranks at Villa Park when they were in the top tier of English football.

He made 30 appearances for the club, scoring one goal, his famous bicyle kick against bitter rivals Birmingham City.

If he does make a return then he will be looking to help Dean Smith’s side close the four-point gap on sixth-placed Derby County in the table.

At this moment in time, Villa have Tommy Elphick, Kortney Hause, James Chester and Axel Tuanzebe as their centre-backs.
