Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers will lock horns in a mouthwatering derby clash on Wednesday night.
Garry Thompson has admitted that, on his current form, he would take back Aston Villa flop Adama Traore, who is set to return to Villa Park with Wolves in the EFL Cup tonight.
The former Villa striker also claimed that he would take Tyrone Mings over Conor Coady, with the two players key men in their respective backlines.
Villa and Wolves are set to clash in a mouthwatering EFL Cup Fourth Round showdown tonight, with the above players having a chance of featuring.
Speaking to BBC Radio WM (29/10/19), Thompson named which Wolves players he would pick ahead of Villa’s, as he gave some mixed responses.
“No deal [on taking Patricio over Heaton], I’d keep Heaton,” Thompson told BBC WM. “Doherty [over Guilbert]. Probably Jonny [over Matt Targett]. Coady or Mings? That’s harsh. I’ve got to go Mings. I do like Coady, but I’ve got to go Mings.
“A couple of months ago maybe [Boly over Mings], but Mings is the man. I cannot go against our Tyrone. Early days, but I have got to go Nakamba [over Dendoncker]. McGinn [over Neves]. Grealish [over Moutinho, though he acknowledges they are different types of players].
“With his form over the last months, I’d have Traore back. I think it’s got to be Jimenez [over Wesley].”
Tyrone Mings earned his maiden England call this season, and during the previous international break, he made his debut for his country as they thrashed Bulgaria in their own backyard.
Coady has been overlooked by Southgate, but it does seem that the Wolves man, playing in a back three instead of a four, is going against him.
Nonetheless, bragging rights will be at stake on Wednesday night, as both Villa and Wolves will want to progress through to the next round of the EFL Cup.
