Aston Villa pundit Garry Thompson has admitted that he’d consider dropping duo Jack Grealish and John McGinn for their trip to Leeds on Sunday afternoon.

The BBC Sport pundit, who played for Villa the last time they earned promotion in the late ’80s, stated that he fears Grealish might get injured and McGinn might pick up another booking.

At this moment in time, McGinn is on 13 bookings and if he receives two more yellows before the season draws to a close then he will be suspended for three games.

Nonetheless, speaking to BBC Radio WM’s Football Phone-In, Thompson mentioned how high-flying Villa would be in two minds about resting players.

“In a way, you are caught up with trying to keep the continuity going,” Thompson told BBC Radio WM. “But also, you look at Jack Grealish, who has been magnificent. Then you see how he takes some clog, the more it’s going on you just think ‘well, hang on, I just want to take him out of the firing line’.

“McGinn, obviously with the booking situation as well. So, you’d be looking at them [to rest them] and thinking anyone one of them that gets the slightest thing around them take them out of the firing line. McGinn’s definitely one I’d be looking to rest.”

Dean Smith’s side top-six status might be confirmed but they are on a seriously good run of form and can still finish in fourth place, which would make a difference heading into the playoffs.

Villa have won their last 10 games, a run which has seen them beat the likes of Derby, Boro, Sheffield Wednesday, Birmingham, Bristol City and Nottingham Forest.

It would be some feat for the club if they can make it 11 in a row and add Leeds United, who could potentially meet them in the playoff final to their list.
