Leeds United have embarked on a poor run of form at the worst time possible.
Leeds United manager Garry Monk
Whites boss Garry Monk spoke to reporters about his side’s chances of forcing their way back inside the top six, and seemed to play down fans’ hopes of making the play-offs this year, highlighting how it is a long-term project that he has undertaken at Elland Road, as quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post.
Leeds currently sit in seventh spot in the table, three points behind sixth placed Fulham, and a further two points behind Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield Town, with only two games remaining.
One thing that plays into the hands of Monk’s men, however, is that the Owls and the Cottagers face each other on the last day of the season, so one of those two sides will definitely drop points, but it still might not be enough.
And the Leeds boss spoke to reporters, using Brighton and Hove Albion as an example of a team that needed to suffer heartache before they could eventually make progression, as quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post:
Leeds United manager Garry Monk
“Elland Road will be a full house, packed. I think that shows the commitment and the bigger picture. Our fans have seen what the players have given and the players have seen what the fans have done. It’s come together. “We’ve been determined all season and we’ve been so competitive all season. There are things we all need to improve on, that’s clear and we’ve talked about that, but these experiences they’re going through – you look at the likes of Brighton who’ve done what they’ve done. That’s not come overnight. That’s come from two or three or four years of work.”
The West Yorkshire outfit face two more games, against Norwich City (h) and Wigan Athletic (a), and a return of six points will be paramount if they have any chance whatsoever of making the top six.
And whilst stranger things have happened, this season might just have come a little too soon for Monk’s talented young group of players to spread their wings.
