Garry Monk’s comments about Rudy Gestede earlier this season take added meaning after Leeds United links

Leeds United are said to be targeting a deal for Middlesbrough striker Rudy Gestede.

Garry Monk’s comments earlier this season about Rudy Gestede suggest Leeds United may be frustrated if they continue to go after the Middlesbrough forward.

The Yorkshire Evening Post suggest that Leeds have made a bid for Gestede, following the departure of Chris Wood to Burnley.

Boro have already batted aside Leeds’ first offer, and it seems from Monk’s comments that the Whites face an uphill struggle getting a deal for the target-man over the line.

Back at the start of August, Monk said about Gestede to the Daily Mail: “What do you think? You saw quite clearly if he has a future here.

“I don’t discount anyone in my squad right now. If others want to do that, then so be it.”

Gestede has gone on to play an important role for Boro this term, and is already off the mark for the campaign after scoring against Sheffield United.

The powerful forward has the potential to work well in tandem with Britt Assombalonga at the Riverside Stadium.

And Monk has had further praise for Gestede recently, after his display against the Blades.

The former Leeds boss said to the Northern Echo: “Rudy was excellent, all the lads are willing each other to do well and that’s the type of spirit we’re trying to create. I’ve got some difficult decisions to make. Rudy has done well.”

Leeds, therefore, may find they are better off already changing targets, as they look to replace Wood.

The YEP claim that Leeds are targeting two new strikers, with Thomas Christiansen eager to improve his forward line.
