Why Garry Monk should go back in to try and sign Sunderland’s Steven Fletcher for Leeds United.

Garry Monk has been appointed as Leeds United head coach, the club confirmed via their official website.
He will soon be plotting transfer targets, and one name who may stand out could be a player he tried to sign for Swansea City last summer, Steven Fletcher.
Sunderland’s Steven Fletcher
The Mirror reported last year how Monk made Fletcher one of his top striking transfer targets for Swansea City, aiming to snap him up for around £4 million.
Fletcher once cost Sunderland three times that, with the Black Cats paying Wolves £12 million to sign him four years ago under Martin O’Neill.
Sunderland ended up retaining Fletcher, but new manager Sam Allardyce decided midway through the season he was expendable, loaning him out to French side Marseille.

Fletcher has recently turned 29, and has plenty more to offer, and could be a real success if he dropped down to the Championship.
Fletcher will become a free agent this summer when his contract expires, and while Herald Scotland last week reported interest from Celtic, Leeds could arguably offer him the chance to play in a more competitive division in the Championship, compared to the Scottish Premiership.
He would be an ideal striker to take the pressure off Chris Wood, and split the goalscoring burden, and could be the 20 goal a season man Leeds have been looking for, who could help propel them towards the play-offs.
