Leeds United boss Garry Monk has suggested that Marco Silvestri is by no means a cast iron back-up to number one Leeds goalie Robert Green.

The Italian had an excellent game against Norwich City in midweek, in a game in which he made three penalty saves and performed well throughout the 90 minutes.

Silvestri was making a rare appearance after losing his starting place to former England international Green after his arrival from QPR in the summer.

Speaking to TV Yorkshire this afternoon however, ahead of Leeds’ meeting with Burton Albion in the Championship this weekend, he insisted that there will always be a battle for every position in the Leeds starting XI:

“They are all tough decisions. There are a lot of players, not just Tuesday, but a lot of games we’ve played, and in the training that we do that have proven a point.

“The difficult decision for me sometimes is that I have to leave somebody out of the squad.

“In terms of who plays and who’s on the subs bench well you do that with the best interests of what the game is, who you feel is doing what.

“You trust it on that and the players understand that.”

Monk’s words will certainly be encouraging for Silvestri, who was a much maligned figure at times during his starting reign at Leeds.

It is also the right attitude. Having Silvestri pushing him all the way can only improve the standard of veteran Green’s displays.

No player should be assured of first-team football and that competitive element is a big boost for the Leeds United team.

Hopefully both stay in good form for the rest of the season.
