Leeds United boss Garry Monk has told LUTV that midfielder Matt Grimes remains very much part of his plans, despite falling out of favour in recent weeks.

The 21-year-old joined Leeds on a season-long loan from Swansea City in the summer but he has found first-team chances hard to come by.

Grimes had a cameo appearance in the 3-0 defeat by QPR on the opening day, and was an unused substitute the following week against Birmingham, but he has not been included in a match-day squad for a Championship outing since then.

His last game came in the 1-0 League Cup win at Luton Town on August 23, prompting questions over his further involvement with Leeds this season.

Of course, Grimes is a player who Monk knows well following their time at Swansea, and the young manager has revealed that his absence is merely linked to the competition for central midfield places, but backs him to take his chance when it comes.

Asked if Grimes is still in his plans, Monk told LUTV: “Yeah they all are. What’s happening with Matty is there’s a good group of midfielders that are competing very well on a daily basis. There’s difficult decisions to make.

“Unfortunately when you pick teams there’s only 11 who can start and some have to miss out. Your job as a professional footballer is to keep working very hard, and knowing Matty very well as I do, he’ll be ready when he’s called upon.”

Leeds, 22nd in the Championship with one win all season, host Blackburn Rovers tonight, but Grimes is unlikely to start. Monk badly needs a win, and he must go with his best XI to get those points and Grimes probably is not in it at the moment.
