Leeds are looking for a new skipper after the Ivorian defender was released.

Leeds United recently made the shock move to release Sol Bamba from his contract at the club, with it initially claimed his exit was due to personal reasons.

The club captain’s departure, it seems, was in fact more a decision from Leeds manager Garry Monk – who had decided he no longer had a place in the Leeds team.

Speaking to the press today, as reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post, Monk seemed to confirm his role in letting Bamba go – in what appears to be more of a footballing decision:

“I am here to get the squad where I want it to be to be competitive. I have to make tough decisions.”

“Every manager would always want more numbers but clearly I think we can (cope with three centre-backs).”

Bamba’s departure of course leaves a hole in the team regarding captaincy.

The club need to replace the Ivorian, with fans and pundits seemingly favouring Liam Bridcutt for the role – although Liam Cooper will also be in with a shout.

Monk confirmed today that he had decided who his new captain was, but would not be sharing that information until game day this weekend:

“Sol was the captain from last season, he played his role. But I am here to make decisions and change things.

“I have decided (the new captain). It’s for me to share with the group and then you will find out at the weekend.”

Whoever it is will need to have good character and big shoulders.

Leeds take on league leaders and local rivals Huddersfield Town this weekend at Elland Road and the Leeds faithful will be expecting the team to cut the Terriers back down to size.

Whoever captains the side will hopefully be at the start of a new and long reign at Leeds United.
