Leeds United’s 2016/17 campaign ended in bitter disappointment.

Whites boss Garry Monk sat down for an exclusive interview with the Yorkshire Evening Post, and insisted that this season must go down as a success for his side, despite the disappointing end to their campaign.
Leeds were inside the top six for the majority of the campaign before hitting a poor run of form at the worst possible time, taking just three points from their final five fixtures, when nine would have been enough to secure a play-off spot.
Monk has undoubtedly improved the West Yorkshire outfit during his time in charge at Elland Road, however, and for the first time in a long time there has been genuine progress made at the club.
And the former Swansea City boss told the Yorkshire Evening Post how his team’s tally of 75 points this year met what he thought was an ambitious pre-season target:

“They wrote a few things down after a group discussion and we filtered it down to what was most important. The final target was 75 points and, at the time, it was a very ambitious target. I wanted them to be ambitious but I didn’t think it was realistic. The fact is they’ve achieved what they set out to do. Of course we feel like we should have had more points in recent weeks. We should have delivered better in recent weeks. But going from where we were to achieving ambitious targets, it’s been fantastic overall.”
If Monk remains in charge at Elland Road, and that is far from a certainty, there is every chance that the Whites can improve again next term, and make a more sustained challenge for promotion, or at least clinch a play-off berth.
