Leeds United head coach Garry Monk has told the club’s official website what has surprised him about Wigan Athletic.

The West Yorkshire outfit will take on Wigan at Elland Road in the Championship on Tuesday evening.

While the Whites are aiming to finish in the top six of the league this season, the Latics’ primary objective is not to get relegated.

Leeds are 13th in the Championship table at the moment with 16 points from 12 matches, just four points behind Birmingham City, who are currently sixth in the standings and occupy the final playoff spot.

Wigan are currently third from bottom in the league table with just 10 points from 12 matches.

Monk, who was appointed the Leeds head coach in the summer, has admitted his surprise at the current league position of Gary Caldwell’s side.

“They are a very good footballing team, I’m quite surprised they are where they in the league with the football they have been playing,” Monk told Leeds’s official website about Wigan.

“We have to be very mindful of their strengths but really it’s about us improving, getting better and we’re confident in our way of football.

“With the crowd behind us we’ll look to impose ourselves on the opposition and if we can do that we will give a good account of ourselves and get the three points we all want.”

Leeds have a better team than Wigan and should fancy their chances of picking up all three points from Tuesday’s match.

Playing at home is certainly going to be an advantage for Monk’s side, who should be disappointed if they fail to win against the Latics.
