Leeds United’s development side are currently stuck at the bottom of their league.

Leeds United boss Garry Monk has told BBC Radio Leeds that Massimo Cellino and Andrea Radrizzani both have big plans to improve the Whites’ academy system.

Leeds have produced a number of excellent talents through their youth system in recent times.

Indeed, Monk has already benefitted from the quality of young talent at Elland Road – with the likes of Kalvin Phillips, Charlie Taylor and Ronaldo Vieira all performing key roles for the first-team this season.

However, there have been question marks over a lack of quality coming through at Leeds’ recently.

Leeds’ development squad are currently sat at the bottom of their league, and they have failed to win for 13 matches.

But Monk insists that he has been given notice that Cellino and Radrizzani do have plans to make improvements to the academy.

“I just think there’s a lot of work to be done at this club,” Monk said. “The owners understand that fully, but it needs time. It won’t happen overnight.

“The first thing you need to get right is the first team, but I’m sure the owners have plans to improve the academy. They’re really committed to it.

“A pathway is still there, and I make sure that it’s still there. I know that the club are looking at helping the academy.”

Leeds plans to improve the academy would obviously be boosted if they could receive a increase in funding, which would come from being promoted to the Premier League.

The Whites have not played in England’s top flight since 2004, but they are currently challenging for a place in the Championship play offs this season.
