Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish was attacked by a spectator during their win against Birmingham City.

Garry Monk has taken to Twitter to respond to Birmingham City’s official statement after a spectator ran onto the pitch during the Second City derby and threw a punch at Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish.
Grealish settled Sunday’s meeting between the two Championship sides with a neat finish midway through the second-half at St Andrew’s. But the winning goal was arguably not the main talking point to emerge from the game.
A spectator ran onto the pitch during the first-half and swung his arm at Grealish, who was unaware that he was being pursued and was walking away from the crowd as he was struck.
Unsurprisingly, everyone has slammed the spectator. The Blues themselves have responded quickly, issuing a statement on their official website during which they apologised to Grealish and Aston Villa, and insisted that the person involved will receive a lifetime ban from the ground.

And Monk has echoed those views. As almost every Birmingham fan has said, the Blues boss has been adamant that the spectator cannot be considered a supporter of the club.
It will be interesting to see what action is taken against the club in the coming days and weeks. But it is clear that almost every single person who has seen or heard about the incident is hoping that the book is thrown at the person involved.

For now, here is Monk’s tweet…
