Liam Bridcutt has not played for Leeds United since September.

Garry Monk has told BBC Radio Leeds that he intends to assess Liam Bridcutt’s performance in Leeds United training this week, before throwing him back into first-team action.

Bridcutt has been out since September with injury, but he is set to step up his comeback this week.

The midfielder will return to Leeds training, and he could be fit for Monk’s side’s match against Brighton & Hove Albion on Friday evening.

However, even though Leeds are low on numbers, Monk has hinted that he will be cautious with the 27-year-old’s recovery.

“He’ll be training with us from Monday, but I have to have a look at him and assess him probably,” Monk said. “He’s needed as well, as the 18 we had against Villa are our only fit players. I will have a good look at him this week.”

Bridcutt was one of Leeds’ star performers last season, during his loan spell at Elland Road.

The Whites made sure they snapped up Bridcutt on a permanent transfer last summer, and he was expected to have a key role to play this term.

However, Leeds’ form has been so good in Bridcutt’s absence, that the Sunderland man now faces a fight to win his place back.

Leeds are currently in fourth place in the Championship table, and there is genuine hope that Monk’s side could mount a push for promotion this term.
