Leeds United boss Garry Monk has told the Daily Mail that his relationship with Massimo Cellino is ‘excellent’ – and he likes how passionate the Italian is about football.

Leeds may have lost 2-0 at home to Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon, but the Whites have shown signs that they can mount a push for a top six place this season.

Before Sunday’s defeat, Leeds had gone four games without defeat in the Championship, and much of this great form is down to manager Garry Monk.

The 37-year-old, who was sacked by Swansea City last December, and is now rebuilding his reputation having performed admirable work at Elland Road with Leeds, who currently sit seventh in the Championship table, just one point off the play-offs.

His recent run of results comes after speculation over his future. After a couple of poor displays to open the season, The Mirror reported that Monk was fighting for his job in August, but trigger-happy chairman Massimo Cellino chose to stick with him.

Leeds fans will be hoping that Cellino continues to keep the faith in Monk, as the Italian has seen off former managers Brian McDermott, David Hockaday, Darko Milanic, Neil Redfearn, Uwe Rosler and Steve Evans in just over two years at Elland Road.

Now, Monk has offered his opinion on the controversial Italian in an interview with the Daily Mail, revealing that his passion for football is something he likes about Cellino, and he stays out of matters away from the pitch.

Monk added that his relationship with Cellino is ‘excellent’, something which will gives Leeds fans hope that Monk is finally the manager who Cellino will keep for the long term.

“My relationship with the owner has been excellent,” said Monk. “He likes to know about the club, he is passionate about it — which I like. My job is the football and all the other side is for the club to deal with,” he added.
