The Leeds United manager feels his side are not ruthless enough yet.
Leeds United boss Garry Monk has admitted to TV Yorkshire that his troops need to be a bit more ruthless in front of goal, but stressed he was pleased with Tuesday’s 1-0 win at Luton Town.
The Whites progressed into the third round of the League Cup last night with a nervy victory over the League Two side, with 20-year-old left-back Tyler Denton the hero of the night after netting a wonderful goal on his senior debut for the club.
After that, Kemar Roofe – who also hit the crossbar – and Stuart Dallas both had opportunities to put the tie to bed but the chances went begging.
Fortunately for Monk and co, the profligacy went unpunished as Luton spurned a couple of golden chances themselves, but things could have easily been different and the coach admits his side could – and should – have spared themselves some anxiety in the final quarter by taking their chances.
He told TV Yorkshire: “Yeah, in those moments we just need to be a little more clinical. I think it would have made it a little bit easier in the last 10 minutes.
“They threw everything at us in the last 10 minutes and we really stood strong. There were some tired legs out there, but I thought to a man we were a real credit.”
Monk’s side made the trip to Kenilworth Road knowing that Luton are capable of toppling the Championship’s best sides after beating Aston Villa in the previous round.
Consequently, it was a good win for Leeds despite Luton’s League Two status, but missing chances is a recurring theme for the Whites under Monk and it is certainly something to look at going forward.
