Leeds United head coach Garry Monk has suggested to The Yorkshire Evening Post that Marco Silvestri and Robert Green will have to constantly prove themselves.

Green is the first-choice goalkeeper for Leeds at the moment, having joined the West Yorkshire outfit in the summer transfer window after leaving Championship rivals Queens Park Rangers at the end of the 2015-16 campaign.

The 36-year-old has featured in 13 Championship matches for the Whites so far this season, keeping four clean sheets in the process.

Silvestri, who was the first-choice goalkeeper for Leeds last season, has yet to make an appearance in the league this campaign.

The 25-year-old goalkeeper, though, did feature in the Whites’ EFL Cup fourth-round tie against Championship rivals Norwich City at Elland Road on Tuesday evening.

The Italian saved three spot-kicks, as Leeds won the tie 3-2 on penalties after it ended 2-2 after 120 minutes.

Leeds head coach Monk has praised Silvestri, and has suggested that it is not set in stone that Green is the first-choice goalkeeper.

“Marco showed a great reaction after Ireland and I brought him back into the squad and he is doing very well – it was an excellent performance on Tuesday and that’s what you want,” Monk told The Yorkshire Evening Post.

“There’s nothing clear cut for all of them,” said Monk when asked if Green was still the clear-cut first-choice goalkeeper. “They all have to prove themselves constantly and the ones that have played more minutes have to keep proving themselves because they know there are people breathing down their neck.”

Leeds will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they take on Burton Albion at Elland Road in the Championship.
