Leeds United head coach Garry Monk has told The Yorkshire Evening Post that he stands by the substitutions he made against Wigan Athletic in midweek.

The West Yorkshire outfit played out a 1-1 draw with Wigan at Elland Road in the Championship on Tuesday evening.

The Whites were expected to pick up all three points from the encounter, and it will have come as a disappointment to the fans that the team failed to bag a win.

Monk made all three substitutions during the match, but Leeds still failed to register a victory.

Matt Grimes replaced Hadi Sacko midway through the second half, Alex Mowatt came on for Pablo Hernandez on 74 minutes, and Marcus Antonsson was brought on for Chris Wood in the 85th minute.

Leeds head coach Monk has explained his decisions to make the aforementioned three substitutions.

“In terms of Hadi we have one decision,” Monk told The Yorkshire Evening Post. “We either leave Hadi on and hope that we get a break-away and possibly get the second goal.

“But with the way the game had gone, we hadn’t taken those chances so you couldn’t rely on that and then they put the fourth midfielder on in Jordi Gomez and they were overrunning us at that stage.

“So you make a decision – either you put an extra midfielder on or you leave Hadi on and, of course, Hadi before the game was a slight injury doubt. I think physically he was dropping so the decision is made to put an extra midfielder on.

“With Pablo, Pablo had a dead leg and you could see that he was struggling physically and we made the change with Mowy. And then Woody I think physically had given everything in that game. He has not had a break in the international break and you make that change.”

Leeds are 14th in the Championship table at the moment with 17 points from 13 matches.

The West Yorkshire outfit are four points behind Sheffield Wednesday, who are currently sixth in the standings and occupy the final playoff spot.
