The former Middlesbrough boss has seen his odds of replacing Alan Pardew at West Bromwich Albion significantly shorten.
Former Middlesbrough manager Garry Monk has emerged as a contender to replace Alan Pardew at West Bromwich Albion, with bookmakers Paddy Power.
Monk, who was sacked by Boro two days before Christmas, was low down on the list of possible Baggies appointments but has seen his odds cut to 7/1 in the space of a few hours.
As of Monday lunchtime, only Harry Redknapp [5/1] and Marco Silva [evens] are above the 38-year-old, as pressure mounts on Pardew after yet another league defeat, against relegation rivals Huddersfield Town on Saturday.
West Brom, who hired Pardew to replace Monk’s Middlesbrough successor Tony Pulis at the end of November, remain seven points adrift of safety at the foot of the table.
The Telegraph reported on Sunday that Albion are already considering the 56-year-old’s position, which could hinge on the result of Saturday’s trip to Watford.
However, the newspaper added that Silva has no intention of becoming West Brom’s manager.
It is perhaps fair to say that Monk underachieved in his five months at Middlesbrough, although the former defender does have experience of a Premier League relegation battle from his time at Swansea City.
Should the worst happen, Monk’s knowledge of the Championship – where he spent several seasons as Swansea’s captain and managed with Leeds United and Middlesbrough – could make him a wise appointment at the Hawthorns.
