Garry Monk signed in-form Kemar Roofe for Leeds United.
Leeds United go to Norwich City this afternoon and their fortunes might well hinge on whether Kemar Roofe maintains his excellent goalscoring form.
The 25-year-old striker has netted four times in his first four Championship games for the high-flying Whites, who look like promotion contenders under new boss Marcelo Bielsa.
Roofe only scored 14 times in 78 Championship outings for United prior to Bielsa’s arrival, so the Argentine has clearly improved the former Oxford United hitman in a relatively short space of time.
But former Leeds boss Garry Monk also deserves a piece of credit for Roofe being at Elland Road in the first place.
Monk spent £3 million [The Yorkshire Post] on signing Roofe from Oxford two years ago. It isn’t a massive amount of money, but it’s a very significant transfer fee for a League Two striker, who wound up being the Yorkshire club’s most expensive signing of that summer.
The current Birmingham City manager clearly had a lot of faith in Roofe’s abilities and despite playing him on the wing for most of the 2016-17 season, Monk might have been planning to use him through the middle in the long term.
The 39-year-old remains an unpopular figure among the Whites faithful for his sudden departure back in May in 2017, followed by his decision to join Middlesbrough a month later.
But if Roofe has a brilliant season then there is no escaping the fact that Monk signed him, even if Bielsa took him to the next level.
