Leeds United have not been outside of the Championship’s top six since November.

Garry Monk has taken to Twitter to comment on Leeds falling out of the play-offs for the first time since November following their disappointing defeat to Wolves at Elland Road on Monday, stressing that he still has full confidence in the squad.

The defeat against Paul Lambert’s men saw the Whites drop out of the play-off places on goal difference as both Sheffield Wednesday and Fulham both won their respective games.

Not only has the performance against Wolves left fans deeply concerned about Leeds’ chances of regaining their place in the top six – Monk’s men were poor for much of the game against a side that had been on the periphery of a relegation battle for much of the season – but the alarming slide the side has endured is also extremely troubling.

Following the win over Brighton immediately before the international break, Leeds were eight points clear of seventh place having played the same number of games, but that advantage has now evaporated just five fixtures later.

Despite being the ones now chasing, the situation is still in Leeds’ hands as the final day fixture between Fulham and Sheffield Wednesday means that the Whites winning all three of their remaining fixtures will be enough for the Yorkshire outfit to regain a spot.

And while Monk did not attempt to defend the performance against Wolves, he insisted that his side can finish the season strongly.

While no Leeds fan would have wanted to fall out of the top six at this stage – especially with virtually no momentum on their side – dropping out and then going on to regain that place would surely make them the team to fear in the play-offs.

Only a stunning run will see them regain their top six spot, and if they manage it, they will have a huge amount of confidence, and the fact that they came so close to throwing it all away should ensure that they head into the additional games with the right mentality should they qualify.
