Heckingbottom left Barnsley for Leeds United on Tuesday.

Former Leeds United managers Garry Monk and Simon Grayson are among the early favourites to succeed Paul Heckingbottom at Barnsley, with bookmakers Sky Bet.
Lincoln City’s Danny Cowley leads the betting at 6/4 after seeing his odds significantly cut on Tuesday afternoon, ahead of Barnsley caretaker boss Paul Harsley and Grayson, who are both 7/2 in the wake of Heckingbottom’s departure for Leeds on Tuesday.

Monk, who played for Barnsley, is next on the list at 5/1. The 38-year-old led Leeds to seventh in the Championship last season, but left to take the reins at newly-relegated Middlesbrough in June – a position from which he was sacked six months later.
Grayson’s last role was also short-lived, with Sunderland parting company with the Yorkshireman they hired from Preston last summer, in late October.

The quartet lead the former Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham manager Martin Jol (9/1), Everton Under-23s boss David Unsworth (12/1) and Fleetwood Town’s Uwe Rosler, another of Heckingbottom’s many predecessors at Leeds (14/1).
Heckingbottom took Barnsley from 12th in League One to 14th in the Championship inside 18 months, but leaves the Tykes in 21st position – a point above the relegation places.
