Leeds United drew 1-1 with Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium this afternoon, ending their Championship campaign – and prompting reactions from Garry Monk and Pep Clotet.

The Whites went into the game knowing that they couldn’t realistically reach the play-offs after a run of just one point in three games, with a win, a Fulham defeat and a remarkable goal swing required.

Unsurprisingly, that didn’t happen, with Fulham winning 2-1 at Sheffield Wednesday whilst Leeds could only muster a 1-1 draw at already relegated Wigan Athletic.

Ryan Tunnicliffe put Wigan in front after just three minutes, but Leeds avoided defeat on the final day of the Championship season by equalising through Chris Wood, who scored from the penalty spot.

That was Wood’s 30th goal of the season in 48 appearances, ending the campaign on a high as Leeds deal with the deflating end to their season as a whole, having seen a play-off place slip through their fingertips.

The attention will now turn to the summer transfer window, with lingering question marks over the futures of both manager Monk and star striker Wood, as well as loanees such as Kyle Bartley and Alfonso Pedraza.

After the final whistle against Wigan, manager Monk took to Twitter to send two messages to the club’s fans, with the Leeds boss feeling that considerable progress has been made this season, even if they wanted more than they got in the Championship table.

Monk added his thanks to the club’s fans, as did assistant manager Pep Clotet, who felt it was a ‘very special season’ at Elland Road, signing off with the club’s famous Marching On Together tagline.
