According to the Telegraph, Aston Villa are monitoring Tottenham maestro Harry Winks as Dean Smith eyes more fresh faces at Villa Park.
What’s the story?
Well, the Telegraph believe Aston Villa are eyeing a new midfielder.
As well as Winks, Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse and Norwich’s Todd Cantwell were mentioned in the report.
It comes after the Villans already added an attacking midfielder to their ranks in Emiliano Buendia, who cost £33 million.
Now, it seems Smith wants a different type of midfielder, one who can operate slightly deeper than Buendia presumably will.
In Winks, Aston Villa have identified a sensible target.
It might be difficult now Nuno Espirito Santo has arrived, and will surely want to cast an eye over all his new players.
However, Winks only started nine Premier League games last season, so he’s not someone Spurs are hugely reliant on.
Gareth Southgate loves him
One man who knows Aston Villa, and Winks, well is Gareth Southgate.
The England boss spent time at Villa Park as a player, and if you were to ask him, he’d probably say Winks would be an excellent signing.
Speaking about the £50,000-a-week man back in 2019, the Daily Mail quote Southgate as saying: “He’s in that category of a very good footballer who can connect defence to attack very well.”
In our view, while Winks is a tidy midfielder, Aston Villa don’t need him.
Smith already has John McGinn, Douglas Luiz, Marvelous Nakamba and Jack Grealish to play in midfield.
That’s without mentioning Morgan Sanson, who made just three Premier League starts following his £15.5 million January move from Marseille.
