Tottenham Hotspur’s Dele Alli scored in England’s match against Malta yesterday.
Gareth Southgate has told Sky Sports that he believes Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli is best utilised playing just behind the forward.
Alli’s versatility has seen him played in a number of positions for Spurs over his time at White Hart Lane.
The former MK Dons man is generally used as in a central attacking midfield position by Spurs, where he is required to play in support of the striker.
However, Alli has also been played as a defensive midfielder and as a winger during his time with Tottenham.
Southgate, though, has suggested that he sees Alli as a number 10 – and intends to play him there for England.
“I think number 10 is Dele’s best position,” Southgate said. “He’s a super link between the midfield and forwards and he is a goalscorer, that’s one of his strengths.”
Alli was selected to start in Southgate’s first match in charge of England yesterday, and he got on the scoresheet in a 2-0 success over Malta.
England were totally comfortable in the match against the international minnows, as they collected three points to add to their total in World Cup qualification.
Alli is likely to start again on Tuesday, when England take on Slovenia.
