Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier and Harry Kane both played for England last night.

Tottenham Hotspur fans can thank Gareth Southgate for handing Eric Dier the armband, as that should serve as a much needed confidence boost.

Dier was left out of Tottenham’s squad for their last match before the international break, which came against Watford.

If that was a confidence knock, then leading England to victory over Switzerland should have helped Dier.

The honour of captaining his country shows just how highly Dier is rated.

But Southgate didn’t only do Spurs a favour last night, as bringing on Harry Kane was a questionable move.

Kane came on for the last half hour of the contest, when the Spurs front man was expected to be rested fully.

Although Kane didn’t pick up an injury, Spurs really could have done with Kane sitting the match out.

Kane has looked fatigued of late, and a week off could have been perfect preparation for the striker, ahead of Pochettino’s side’s match against Liverpool at the weekend.

But Spurs now don’t have a fully rested up striker, as Southgate decided to play him in a friendly, which Pochettino may feel was an unnecessary risk from the England boss.
