Rangers added signing number 15 on Monday as defender Gareth McAuley became the latest addition to Steven Gerrard’s squad.

The Gers had already added 14 new faces with Allan McGregor, Jon Flanagan, Nikola Katic, Connor Goldson, Joe Worrall, Borna Barisic, Lassana Coulibaly, Scott Arfield, Ovie Ejaria, Jamie Murphy, Ryan Kent, Eros Grezda, Kyle Lafferty and Umar Sadiq, but Gerrard clearly felt that he needed more.

Just 24 hours after Gerrard tasted defeat for the first time as Rangers manager with a 1-0 loss at Celtic in his first Old Firm derby, he was back in the transfer market making another signing – even though the transfer window ended on Friday.

Gerrard snapped up free agent defender Gareth McAuley, handing the 38-year-old a contract until the end of the season to bolster his back line again.

The Northern Ireland international was released by West Bromwich Albion at the end of last season, and brings a wealth of experience to Ibrox having racked up more than 200 Premier League appearances.

McAuley suggested when he completed his move that it was a dream for him having grown up supporting the Gers, and he has now taken to Twitter to post a heartfelt message that his dreams have come true, accompanied by a photo of him as a child in Rangers gear.
