Rangers defender Gareth McAuley spoke to reporters, and claimed that Steven Davis is not appreciated at Southampton, amidst rumours linking the 33-year-old with a switch to Ibrox, as quoted by Sky Sports.

According to a report from the Scottish Sun, Steven Gerrard is keen to bring the Northern Ireland international to Rangers in January, and Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl will not stand in the midfielder’s way.

Davis spent four-and-a-half years with the Gers, making 210 appearances in all competitions for the Glasgow giants, and he was a popular figure at Ibrox.

Davis would undoubtedly help strengthen the Rangers’ midfield, and he could be a real steal for Gerrard’s men.

According to the Scottish Sun, Southampton could be willing to let the 105 capped Northern Ireland international leave on a free in January, as a thank you for his six years spent at the club.

McAuley, who knows Davis well from their time spent together with the Northern Ireland national team, spoke exclusively to Sky Sports, and insisted that the 33-year-old would jump at the chance to join Rangers:

Dublin , Ireland - 12 November 2018; Gareth McAuley arrives prior to a Northern Ireland Training Session at Gannon Park in Malahide, Dublin.

“I know he’s frustrated at not playing football, and I know if the opportunity is there for him and things are not right for him at Southampton, I’m sure he would love to join Rangers. It’s an amazing club. I cant think of anywhere else better to play. I don’t think he’s really appreciated at the club he’s at.”

Gerrard will be hoping that his Rangers side can keep in touch with Celtic over the next few months, and if they sign Davis, the former England and Liverpool skipper will be confident in their chances of doing just that.
