Former Aston Villa captain Gareth Barry has responded to the suggestions that he could return to the club for one last hurrah, as reported by the Birmingham Mail.

Barry was Mr. Aston Villa to many fans from his professional debut in May 1998 until he left for Manchester City in 2009.

The midfielder made 441 appearance sin all competitions for Villa before his exit, although his name was sullied amongst some supporters by the manner of his exit.

Now the Premier League’s most-capped player still currently active, at the age of 36 Barry is firmly in the twilight of his career at Everton.

With his playing days winding down, there has been some unfounded speculation that he could consider a short-lived return to Villa to finish his career where he started it.

When quizzed on the possibility of such a move, Barry did not rule it out. He said, via the Birmingham Mail: “I do get that asked a lot. You never say never but Everton is my sole focus at the moment.

“I look out for their results all the time. The majority of my friends are from Birmingham and supporting either Villa or Blues.”

It would perhaps be unlikely to see such a move actually come to fruition, although certain players have made a similar move to old clubs in the later stages of their careers.

Though his departure was eight years ago, some fans may still hold a grudge against their former hero for the way he looked to force a move out of Villa Park.

However, there are likely to be others who would love to see him come in to steady the ship and provide a guiding hand in the Championship.
