Paul Robinson has warned Mikel Arteta on the Football Show on Sky Sports (06/10/20 at 10:25 am) that Arsenal have to find a solution with Mesut Ozil because it’s turning into a ‘Gareth Bale situation’.
It’s been clear for a number of months now that Ozil is not part of Arteta’s plans and the forward-thinking German cannot even find a space for himself on Arsenal’s bench.
Prior to his return to Tottenham, Bale was going down a similar road in Madrid where he was hardly playing, and before he left, he wasn’t even assigned a squad number before he made the decision to leave and re-join Spurs.
Former Spurs keeper, Robinson, thinks that Arsenal are now potentially heading down that path because this is now a ‘problem’ for both parties.
“The Ozil situation is one that’s dragging on,” Robinson told Sky Sports. “If they’re not careful it could end up into a Gareth Bale situation at Real Madrid.
“It’s going to be a real stalemate. He is obviously earning whatever he is earning. I looked at it the other day, it’s about £1.4 million a month that he draining out at that club. And that is a lot of money to drain out of a football club about £1.4 million a month on wages.
Arsenal’s record transfer deals

£72 million
- Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
£56 million
- Alexandre Lacazette
£52 million
- Thomas Partey
45 million
- Mesut Ozil
£42 million
“If they can free that up in some way and even give half of that back to the manager to put back into the team then that’s going to happen. It’s a situation where he has signed a contract in good faith and he’s getting paid that money. And he’s not been played.
“It’s very similar to the Gareth Bale situation at Real Madrid. How it’s going to end? You don’t know. But you would like to think there is going to be some kind of resolution to a problem like that because it’s a problem for both parties.”

One of the major differences between Ozil and Bale is that the former is actually liked by his own supporters and there still seems to be mutual respect between the player and his 38-year-old manager, who he also played alongside.
For Bale, everything was seemingly going horribly wrong for him from his relationship with the Madrid fans, the media and his coach Zinedine Zidane.
Whilst Ozil will feel, just like Bale in Spain, he is has been very harshly treated by the British media, he can only put his head down and try to prove people wrong once more.
