Some Tottenham Hotspur fans on Twitter have hijacked a tweet by Gareth Bale and used it to call for his return to North London.
The Wales international has a year to run on his contract at Real Madrid but never has it looked so clear that Bale has no future in the Spanish capital.
Bale, who joined Real from Tottenham in 2013, was left out of Zinedine Zidane’s squad for the Champions League defeat by Manchester City earlier this summer, and then cut a subdued figure when his team-mates celebrated winning the league.
Quatro reported earlier in August that the 31-year-old was keen to re-sign for the Lilywhites this summer.
This afternoon, Bale posted a promotional tweet for BT Sports ahead of the 2020-21 campaign and, predictably, he was absolutely inundated with appeals from Spurs fans to ‘come home’.
So, is he coming home? Well, no.
The reason why Tottenham are relying on bargains this summer – like, say, signing Joe Hart for free – is because chairman Daniel Levy isn’t in a position to spend vast sums of money.
And although Bale wouldn’t cost much in terms of transfer fee, his £600,000-a-week wages are another thing entirely and there’s just no way Levy would sign off on it, especially with no Champions League revenue – or match-day revenue – coming in next season.
