Four years after leaving Tottenham, there is no longer unfinished business for Gareth Bale at Real Madrid
Gareth Bale signs for Real Madrid
It is four years since Gareth Bale quit Tottenham Hotspur for Real Madrid in a world record transfer move.
The Welshman’s former club have in that time sacked two managers, spent the entirety of his fee and sold most of his replacements, and are finally looking like an even better team than before he left.
The credit belongs to head coach Mauricio Pochettino who has built a formidable team, just lacking that one extra dose of star power which would take them over the hump, and start lifting trophies.

Bale would be perfect, although there is little prospect of signing him this summer.
In the future, when Spurs are at their new stadium and will have their transfer budget boosted by increased gate receipts and Champions League football revenue, buying back the Welshman could become a reality.
As far as Bale is concerned, he has already reached the stage where he could depart Real Madrid with his conscience clear that he has been a success.
Real won the La Liga title at the weekend, Bale’s first league trophy at the club, and indeed in his career.

He has lifted the Champions League twice, and won the Copa del Rey. The La Liga title was the final piece of the jigsaw.
If Tottenham made an ambitious attempt to re-sign him next summer, it is unlikely they would be successful if Bale was still in search of his first La Liga medal.
There is plenty for him still to accomplish at Madrid, he could lift a third Champions League trophy next week, but there is no unfinished business.
He has achieved what he set out to do in Spain, and now Tottenham just need to wait until they get into a financial position to be able to tempt him back.
It is hard to believe that from a sporting perspective, he would not be attracted to the side Pochettino is continuing to build.
