Sunderland have been strongly linked with Wycombe Wanderers boss Gareth Ainsworth.

Gareth Ainsworth has admitted to the Chronicle that he has been told about the rumours linking him with the Sunderland job, but he is fully focused on Wycombe Wanderers.

Ainsworth has been suggested as a leading candidate to take over from Jack Ross at Sunderland.

But it seems that the 46-year-old’s head won’t be turned by the potential opportunity at the Stadium of Light.

“Sunderland are a huge club and I’m fully concentrated on Saturday’s game,” he said.

“I’m told there’s a lot of rumours and that’s flattering, because it shows we’re doing well. It would take something spectacular to take me away from here.

“There are so many factors in that. My family, my work here, the vote. But we’re very proud of what we’ve got here. I’m Wycombe Wanderers manager and I want to give the best account of ourselves on Saturday.”

The Daily Mail suggest that Sunderland are set to appoint Phil Parkinson anyway, with Ainsworth missing out.

But it seems that the Wycombe boss won’t be pushing to see if Sunderland could be persuaded to take him.

Ainsworth has done an impressive job at Wycombe, despite working on a relatively small budget.

Wycombe are currently seven places above Sunderland in the League One table, with the Black Cats now looking to chase down the Chairboys.

Strangely enough, Wycombe’s next game comes against Sunderland on Saturday.
