Spurs lost 1-0 to Atletico Madrid in Melbourne earlier today.
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino
Spurs suffered their second defeat in a week today despite dominating proceedings for much of the game against Atletico Madrid.
The Spanish side started with eight players who featured in the Champions League final in May, while Spurs once again mixed academy and fringe players.
Tottenham’s Erik Lamela in action
Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen were two first-team stars who returned to the fold and their impact was clear to see.
Spurs started off brightly and controlled possession whilst also threatening to break down one of Europe’s top defences.
Josh Onomah struck the crossbar with a volley on the turn, while Lamela also hit the woodwork after excellent link-up play with Vincent Janssen.
Vincent Janssen scores for Netherlands
Mauricio Pochettino’s men went behind against the run of play on the 40th minute when Diego Godin capitalised on Anton Walkes’ failure to deal with a simple lofted free-kick.
Spurs continued to control the game in the second period and only failed to find the net thanks to two excellent saves from Jan Oblak, first denying Ryan Mason’s sweetly struck half volley and then Janssen’s venomous free-kick.
Despite losing both games on their Australian tour, Pochettino will feel positive ahead of the new campaign with summer signings settling in and academy prospects proving they can be trusted.
