Bafetimbi Gomis’s scored the winner against the Gunners for the second time this season, but the results owed a lot to a former Arsenal man.
Swansea City stunned Arsenal with a late Bafetimbi Gomis header to win 1-0 at the Emirates on Monday night.
The Gunners had been camped inside their opponents half for large periods of the game, but were unable to find their way past a resolute Swans defence and and a goalkeeper who looked like he wouldn’t be beaten even if the match lasted all night.
Or maybe it was just that Swansea’s former Arsenal ‘keeper Lukasz Fabianski could guess which way his old teammates would choose to shoot.
The Pole made nine saves against the club he spent seven years at, in what his first visit to the Emirates as an opposition player.
But even though Swansea’s defence was commendable, few expected a winner from the Welsh outfit, only for winger Jefferson Montero to cross for substitute Gomis to head past David Ospina in the 85th minute.
It was Arsenal’s first defeat in eleven Premier League games, and the Frenchman’s first appearance since a hamstring injury ruled him out of the previous three games. For added drama, referee Kevin Friend needed the intervention of goal line technology to be clear the ball went over the line before it was pushed clear by the Colombian.
Luckily for Swansea, they have watches that help with that sort of thing nowadays. Arsenal on the other hand may be wondering if they made a mistake in letting one particular player leave last summer.
