Manchester City edged out Manchester United as they laboured to a 1-0 defeat against ten men, after Chris Smalling was sent off for two needless yellow cards.
Manchester United started the game well and took control of the match before Michael Oliver was left with no choice but to send Smalling off, which changed the momentum and pattern of the game.
United defended hard but eventually City broke through with a neat finish from Sergio Aguero the difference between the teams as Wayne Rooney and Angel Di Maria both missed good chances to equalise for United in the second half.
City have managed to maintain the pressure on Chelsea at the top of the league while United drop more points in the race for the top four, which will disappoint Louis van Gaal following the positive performance at Chelsea last weekend.
