Spurs beat Serbian outfit Partizan Belgrade 1-0 to qualify for the knockout stages of the Europa League, but the game will be remembered for being temporarily suspended after three separate pitch invaders interrupted an understandably disjointed first period.
Spurs were much stronger in the second half, with Aaron Lennon and Erik Lamela influential in offensive positions, but it was defensive midfielder Benjamin Stambouli who would provide the games sole goal. The Frenchman carried the ball towards the Partizan box in the 49th minute, feeding Roberto Soldado who clipped a great chip against the post, only for the ball to come back to Stambouli who lashed it into the empty net.
It was the former Montpellier man’s first goal for the club since he arrived in the summer, and came as part of a strong performance that may see him involved against Everton at the weekend.
Soldado also showed plenty of passion while he was on the pitch, even if his goalscoring touch continued to desert him at key moments. Tellingly, Harry Kane replaced the Spaniard with 25 minutes left and looked full of confidence and threat.
Young midfielder Harry Winks came on for his debut towards the end of the match and showed some nice touches.
