Newcastle defeated on opening weekend
Matt Smith’s header gave Fulham all three points at Craven Cottage leaving Newcastle United with a defeat on the opening weekend of the season.
It was a relativley flat performance from the Magpies who failed to live up their pre-season hype with eight shots in the 90 minutes with only two of those on target.
Two on the bounce as Huddersfield shock St. James’
Not the start that any Newcastle fan envisaged as Huddersfield made it two defeats in two at the start of the season for Rafael Benitez’s men. A late Jack Payne goal shocked St. James’ leaving Newcastle with much work to do.
Many believed that Benitez undermined the intensity and level of the Championship and it was certainly clear to see after this result.

Relief as first points are on the board
It was a sigh of relief as Benitez’s men recorded their first victory and points of the season, Isaac Hayden, Matt Ritchie and two Dwight Gayle goals were enough to see off Jaap Stam’s Reading side who were well in the game until the last 20 minutes.
The result was an important one especially with the Geordies being the favourites to win the Championship let alone promotion, this was no doubt a result that lifted pressure off the club.

QPR hit for six at Loftus Road
It was six for Newcastle as they inflicted a damaging defeat to Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s QPR side, an all round performance includng a superb brace from Jonjo Shelvey.
Despite a slow start it seems as though Newcastle found their rhythm under the Spaniard, the win made it five straight league victories seeing Benitez’s side climb the table into second, only one point behind leaders Huddersfield.

Wolves end winning streak with surprise win
Wolves bounced back after a midweek defeat to Barnsley to beat Newcastle and end their recent run of good form.
Chancel Mbemba headed Jon Dadi Bodvarsson’s cross into his own net to give the visitors, who lost 4-0 in midweek, a half-time lead. Winger Helder Costa curled in a second from 18 yards just after the hour.
Despite Newcastle creating a number of chances as well as having the majority of possession it was Walter Zenga’s men left with the points with a resolute and determined performance after a damaging result in during that week.

Newcastle denied late at Villa Park
Aaron Tshibola headed a late equaliser as Aston Villa fought back to draw with Newcastle in a meeting of two of last season’s Premier League sides.
Villa had already lost nine points from winning positions this season, more than any other team in the Championship, after conceding a host of late goals.
But it was Newcastle who were left feeling deflated after not taking a series of chances to put the game out of the hosts’ reach.

A huge game at St. James’ as two relegated sides from last season met with in form Norwich travelling to Newcastle.
Newcastle United fought back from 3-1 down to win a seven-goal thriller with two goals in stoppage time at home to Norwich City in the Championship.
Dwight Gayle scored a hat-trick for the hosts, his third coming dramatically in the sixth minute of added time after Yoan Gouffran levelled on 95 minutes.
After Gayle’s opener, goals from Graham Dorrans, Cameron Jerome and Jacob Murphy had put Norwich two goals clear.
But Gayle’s second quickly made it 3-2 to set up a stunning Magpies fightback.
