Boro took the lead against the Championship high-flyers but were pegged back after over 100 minutes played at the Riverside.
Middlesbrough came so close to triumphing against high-flying Leeds United in Saturday’s early Championship kickoff at the Riverside Stadium but had to make do with a share of the spoils in what finished as a 1-1 draw.
The first half ended goalless but Lewis Wing broke the deadlock early on in the second period when he latched on to George Friend’s cutback, set himself up with a deft touch, and slammed home into the bottom corner of the net.
Boro began sitting back for much of the game after taking the lead as Leeds went on to dominate proceedings but struggled for a while to make their possession count, although Kemar Roofe, Pontus Jansson and Patrick Bamford all had a go midway through the half.
Play was held up late in the second half while paramedics tended to Leeds youngster Jack Clarke, who was on the visitors’ bench and required medical treatment, before he was carried off on a stretcher receiving oxygen and taken to hospital as a precaution.
The delay resulted in 12 minutes of stoppage time being added by referee Darren England and, in the 101st minute of the match, Whites midfielder Kalvin Phillips headed home beyond the reach of Boro goalkeeper Darren Randolph to deny Tony Pulis’s charges victory.
