Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale made a really bad mistake against Brentford, and talkSPORT pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor has suggested that it was manager Mikel Arteta’s fault.

Aaron Ramsdale started for Arsenal in the London derby against Brentford at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday evening.

David Raya is the number one goalkeeper for the Gunners, but he was ineligible to play against his parent club Brentford in North London.

So, Ramsdale started for Arsenal, and the £120,000-a-week (Spotrac) goalkeeper gave away a goal to Brentford in first-half injury time.

The England international goalkeeper failed to properly control and clear a simple back-pass, and the ball eventually ended up in his goal.

Gabriel Agbonlahor on Aaron Ramsdale mistake for Arsenal vs Brentford

It was a really bad mistake, but former Aston Villa striker and talkSPORT pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor seems to have blamed Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta for it.

The pundit has noted that Ramsdale had not played for Arsenal for weeks, and lack of match sharpness was the reason why he made the error.

Agbonlahor said on talkSPORT (6:21 pm, March 9, 2024) while discussing Ramsdale’s mistake: “Arteta doesn’t look happy. Arteta – you can’t say a word.

“He has not played all season, and you expect him to come in and be bang at it. No. Imagine me and you not playing all season and you are like, go on them.

“You are going to be slow, you are going to be sluggish, you are not going to be at it, it happens with outfield players, keepers are the same.

“He took a touch and probably can’t see the right-back on, the right centre-half on, so he thought, ‘Oh, I am going to look for someone else’. You haven’t got that time.

“And, he hasn’t got the luck, Jamie. For other keepers, it goes over the bar.”

My View: Aaron Ramsdale should have done better

I do not think that anyone can blame Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta for the mistake that Aaron Ramsdale made.

It was one of the worst goalkeeping errors we have seen this season in any division in English football.

It was a simple back-pass that Ramsdale had enough time to clear away. There was no need for him to take the first casual touch.

Yes, Ramsdale had not played for a while, but that does not mean that he would take liberty with the ball at his feet in front of goal with a Brentford player just yards away from him.
