At the age of just 19, John Mahon has already been tipped to make the step up from the League of Ireland at the end of this season.

The teenage Sligo Rovers defender has been hugely impressive in his homeland, establishing himself as one of the most promising young talents to emerge in Irish football in many a year. No wonder there are a number of clubs interested across the Irish Sea.

According to The Express (19 February, page 47), Old Firm rivals Celtic and Rangers are both hoping to bring Mahon to Glasgow while he is also a target for Championship duo Derby County and Blackburn Rovers.

Interestingly, the report suggests that Mahon has his heart set on a move to Celtic, where he would follow in the footsteps of a number of Republic of Ireland heroes from Robbie Keane to Pat Bonner, Tony Cascarino to Aiden McGeady.

But what do Sligo Rovers fans think about the speculation? Well, it seems they are desperate for Mahon to stay and continue to hone his trade back home before making the seemingly inevitable move to a bigger league.
