Rio Ferdinand has claimed that Arsenal are ‘further away’ than Manchester United in winning the Premier League title, as he told Vibe with Five.

The former centre-back claimed that Arsenal winning FA Cups in recent years doesn’t prove that they are capable of winning the ‘big trophies’, such as the Premier League and the Champions League.

Both Manchester United and Arsenal fans crave for the day they can battle it out again at the top of England’s top-flight.

It has been nearly two decades since those in North London tasted top-flight glory, whilst their Old Trafford rivals are about to enter double figures also.

Either way, when Ferdinand was talking about Manchester United needing to build, he raised some interesting points involving Arsenal.

“I think Man United have to write off the next year or two and say ‘we are going to rebuild’, minimum,” said Ferdinand.

“You can’t have that transition and win. It doesn’t happen. Liverpool didn’t do it. How long did it take Klopp to win? Man United aren’t in a position to challenge for trophies – the big trophies, the Premier League and the Champions League.

On FA Cups: “You can take the FA Cup, but it doesn’t tell you that you are a great team or your teams going to challenge for the league. Arsenal have proved to be an example of that.

“Wimbledon won the FA Cup, they were never going to win the league. Arsenal won the FA Cup in recent seasons, they were never going to be anywhere near winning the league. You (Arsenal) are further away than Man United are, in terms of winning the league. You are below us (in the table).”

The Premier League table, both last season and this season, suggests that it’s Man United closer than the Gunners.

But, in truth, that doesn’t probably say much because they are in the same boat of needing to build their way to the top again.

Even though Man United don’t have a permanent manager in the dugout, they will point towards them still being in the Champions League as another example that they are closer.

Although, Mikel Arteta will probably argue that they have taken one step back to take two steps forward and their young and hungry squad has a longer span life than Man United.
