Fulham left to regret failure to sign Newcastle striker Gayle

The Newcastle striker has been back in form of late, which will only make Fulham’s failed summer bid harder for the Cottagers to swallow.

Given his recent exploits in front of goal, Newcastle United supporters will be delighted that the club didn’t sell Dwight Gayle in the summer when he was heavily linked with a move away.

As reported by The Sun, Fulham made a £18 million bid for Gayle in the closing stages of the summer transfer window but the move failed to materialise.

It was also reported by The Mirror that Gayle was made available for transfer.

Had Newcastle let Gayle go it would have been a major mistake, with the striker having demonstrated his credentials in recent weeks by scoring three goals in his last four games.

Gayle’s clinical nature in front of goal is a huge asset for Newcastle and their current predicament, which sees them languishing in 16th place in the Premier League, would be worse were it not for his contributions.

Fulham, meanwhile, have been left to rue their failure to sign Gayle, who will surely be beyond their reach in the January transfer window.

Currently in 12th place in the Championship, Fulham have scored 27 league goals this season, which isn’t an especially bad return, but they have lacked a clinical striker, with left-sider Ryan Sessegnon joining midfielders Oliver Norwood and Stefan Johansen as the club’s joint-top scorers on four goals each.

Although he has only truly established himself again as a regular in recent weeks, Gayle is Newcastle’s joint-top scorer this season with three goals, along with Joselu.

Gayle has demonstrated that he can perform on the big occasion as he found the net away to both Chelsea and Manchester United, and having also struck against Leicester City he will now be full of confidence.

Had Fulham managed to sign Gayle then there surely would have been a good chance of them securing a place in the play-offs. Now, however, it is likely that they will struggle to push towards that position in the table unless they can somehow find a player of Gayle’s quality in the January transfer window.
