Lasse Vigen Christensen scored the winning goal as Fulham came from a goal behind to beat Middlesbrough 2-1 in the second-round of the League Cup.

Championship side Fulham went behind in the ninth minute when David Nugent’s headed goal gave Aitor Karanka’s Middlesbrough side the lead after new signing Fabio Da Silva’s cross to the back past. But Fulham came back into the game when Julien De Sart deflected Scott Malone’s strike into his own goal.

But with penalties looming Malone became provider again when his low cross was turned goal wards as Christensen sent Slavisa Jokanovic’s side into the third-round, where they’ll play Bristol City.

Fulham thoroughly deserved their win, but took their time to get going, and understandably so having made 10 changes from the side that drew 2-2 with Cardiff in the Championship on Saturday. After being dealt the blow of going a goal down so early on, they settled and created their first real chance when Cauley Woodrow saw his close range shot saved by Brad Guzan.

The Cottagers had the better of the chances after they drew level and went close when Guzan tipped a Woodrow effort over the bar. In extra time Fulham had clear cut chances that fell to substitute Matt Smith and also saw a Sean Kavanagh effort blocked on the line by Ben Gibson. But in the 113th minute Christensen hit Fulham’s winner to send Jokanovic’s side through to the third round.

Speaking after the game Karanka voiced his disappointment when the BBC reported he said: “I’m disappointed because I said before the game this trophy is very important for the club.I have to apologise to our crowd because they came here midweek and it’s an important trophy for this club, we respect this trophy a lot. So this has been difficult.”
