Fulham fans have taken to Twitter following the arrival of World Cup-winning goalkeeper Alphonse Areola from Paris Saint-Germain.

The 27-year-old – who spent last season on loan at Real Madrid – becomes Scott Parker’s latest arrival at Craven Cottage. Areola will compete with Marek Rodak for the number one shirt.

The former Villarreal shot-stopper has penned a season-long loan deal with the play-off winners.

On paper, this move looks fantastic for Fulham. They have secured a glovesman of real pedigree who boasts three caps for France, as well as experience in the Champions League.

However, it’s hard not to get a feeling of déjà vu. In the Cottagers’ last top-flight stint Marcus Bettinelli – the man who helped them secure promotion – was dropped after the arrival of Sergio Rico and Fabri.

We can only wait to see whether Rodak, who made WhoScored’s Championship team of the season, retains the number one shirt following this high-profile signing.

However, it would be a punch to the gut for the Slovakian if Parker gives him the Bettinelli treatment – something Slaviša Jokanović wasn’t afraid to do.

Here is what some Fulham fans have been saying about the situation on Twitter…
